Maintenance free

Besides having a freely distributed Java virtual machine on your computer, there is literally no maintenance to undergo on the client PC with regards to installed applications or updates. The PORTIS application is downloaded by accessing a website and then it's available as a desktop shortcut if so desired. Every time the application is started, it will validate with the PORTIS server to make sure that it is still running the latest version. If updates are detected, they will automatically be downloaded from the server.

Platform independent

Because the application is Java based, there are no specific operating system requirements for the client PC. It can be Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.

Up-to-date and real time

The data accessed by the client is always up to date from the server. There is no need for local copies of data on client PCs which soon become outdated. Dynamic data such as water level or target position is polled automatically. Other more static data, such as charts or drawings, is available to the end-user as soon as they have been updated on the server.

Modular

The modular nature of the system allows for a phased implementation. Modules such as Target Tracking, Bathymetry, ENC, etc. can be made available, or not, depending on whether your organization has that type of data to share. Access to the specific modules can also be restricted to specific user groups.

User-friendly

The simple user-friendly interface requires no training to learn. The design of PORTIS is a result of numerous requests from clients wanting to make the information available to all their staff and clients regardless of their level of expertise. A comprehensive online help module is available at the click of the mouse in case some specific features are less than obvious.

Flexible

Features such as full unit support for metric and imperial systems as well as on-the-fly reprojection allow PORTIS to work the way you want it to work.

Adaptable

PORTIS focuses on generating results from your data and not by replacing your existing investments with new formats and versions. It does this by supporting a wide array of native CAD and GIS formats. These include: S-57 ENC, BSB Raster Nautical Charts, GeoTIFF, MrSID, TIFF/TFW, TIFF/IGA, CARIS, MicroStation (.dgn), AutoCAD (.dwg and .dxf), MapInfo (.mif / .mid), ArcView (Shapefiles), Oracle Spatial, OGC, and geospatial point data from ODBC databases.

OGC Web Mapping Server
The Spatial Fusion Mapping engine that supports PORTIS implements both the OGC WMS version 1.0.0, 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 specifications and the OGC version 1.0 Web Feature Server (Transactional WFS) specification. Enable WMS capability with the flip of a switch.

Scalable

The Spatial Fusion Mapping Engine that supports PORTIS has been designed to scale from small systems with just a couple of users all the way up to commercial ASP solutions serving thousands of simultaneous users. The distributed multi-process architecture allows systems to scale up without modification to the application. New hardware can be added to the system to accommodate an increase in user demand without changes to the application.
