MrSID Plug-in for CARIS Software
The MrSID plug-in for CARIS installs onto an existing installation of your CARIS product and allows users to add MrSID imagery created using LizardTech's GeoExpress with MrSID software directly into their local CARIS application.
CARIS has created this free plug-in to enable CARIS users to manage, access, and share massive amounts of imagery including aerial photos and satellite images across an organization with minimal use of system resources.
About MrSID
MrSID is an acronym for Multi-resolution Seamless Image Database. MrSID is a powerful wavelet based image encoder, viewer and file format designed specifically for GIS professionals to enable true portability of massive images. MrSID enables instantaneous viewing and manipulation of imagery both locally and over networks without sacrificing image quality. Features include unprecedented compression ratios; true multiple resolutions, selective decompression, seamless mosaicking, and browsing.
MrSID's planar architecture enables the features narrated above. A plane, or "bitplane", is an efficiently encoded representation of a subset of the image data corresponding to a degree of image quality and level of resolution.
- A MrSID image is a set of bitplanes.
- All bitplanes are essentially optional. A high-quality image is still achievable even when not all bitplanes are retained.
- A transaction of MrSID image data is simply the extraction and delivery of exactly and only those bitplanes necessary to construct a view according to desired scene, scale, or image quality, independent of bandwidth constraints.
